“Speech, as the mirror of one’s soul, wields unparalleled influence.”
As part of the sidelights of the recently concluded Sportsfest 2024, an interdepartmental oratorical and declamation contest was held on October 29, 2024, at Talamban Times Square. Dubbed “Words and Music,” the event engaged students from various departments, providing them with a platform to hone their communication and public speaking skills and introducing young audiences to the rich trove of declamation and oratorical masterpieces.
Eight budding orators, meticulously selected through auditions, vied for the title using the piece “Mens Sana in Corpore Sano,” or “A Healthy Mind in a Healthy Body,” which was the theme of Sportsfest 2024. Mark Stephen Jadaong, a first-year student pursuing a Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology, outshone other contestants with his refined oratory skills, confidence, and eloquence.
While oration is a spoken essay, declamation is a style of public speaking that is both artistic and dramatic. Among ten participants in the declamation contest, Computer Engineering Technology freshman Seth Jems Rodrigo captivated the audience with his rendition of the classic piece “Am I to Be Blamed?” demonstrating profound characterization and a keen sense of articulation.
The event also featured captivating vocal performances and cheer dance presentations. Serving as a pinnacle of inspiration and learning, “Words and Music” demonstrates that active student participation is one of the most enriching forms of education.
